Build it yourself
Everything that makes onpit is open: the guides, the documentation and the code. You can build, run and change onpit entirely yourself. For free, and without needing us.
The way to your onpit
This is the order we built onpit in ourselves, and the order the guides follow.
Get the hardware
At least three computers, a switch and storage for backups. Raspberry Pi 5, mini PCs or old servers. The onpit Home parts list is open.
Install the base system
Debian on every node, OpenZFS on the storage. With SSH keys instead of passwords.
Build the cluster
k3s across all nodes, Longhorn for mirrored storage, backups to the storage server. Plus the traps we fell into ourselves.
Network and login
NetBird connects all devices with encryption, Traefik handles access, Zitadel is the one login for everything.
Applications
Mail, files, calendar, video and chat, one after another, each connected to the shared login.
AI brain
Run open language models locally and connect them to your own data.
The guides appear on Codeberg step by step. We only publish a step once it runs for us.
Get involved
onpit should become a name that belongs to the community, not just to us. Every contribution counts:
- Follow the guides and report where they snag
- Improve or translate the documentation
- Contribute code, fix bugs, suggest new components
- Show your own onpit builds, especially on other hardware
Why Codeberg
Codeberg is a non-profit association based in Berlin that runs an open platform for code. Our code lives there rather than with a US corporation, for the same reason onpit exists.
